Chapter 7 ~ The Past of an Innocent Child

"Hey, do you remember what you said back then?" I asked.
"Hm? What do you mean, Carmel??" replied Mike.
"You know, when you said, 'ah, you're name sounds like my friend who died in front of me' or something" I replied while saying the words like a sumo wrestler.
Mike walked quietly, thinking about it. As we walk home, he's still thinking in silence. After he muttered for a while, he stopped walking. I was surprised. What's in his mind? I thought.
He held his head up and said, "I'm sorry, Carmel. I shouldn't have said that to you back then."

Just when I was gonna calm him, he continued, "10 years ago, when I was about 6 years old, I had a friend named Carmel Norrace. She was my best friend, we played together since we were 2 or 3 years old. One day, Carmel, insisted to play near the old practice range. I tried to stop her but she didn't want to. So, I came along with her. When we were playing hide and seek, I was the one to seek. Right when I counted to 5, I heard her scream. I turned around and she was held captive by an old military veteran. It looks like he has a big vengeance on the Norrace family. He held his knife right in front of Carmel's neck. 'Well, well, looky here. I've got myself another piece of the Norrace and oh, an eyewitness. Just sit back and watch closely kid, I'm gonna kill your little friend right here.' he said. I wanted to help her, yet, I just a kid, I can't do anything. I charged towards him and he dodged me. He cornered me and laughed. He killed Carmel with a big knife in front of me and I screamed."

I took a big shock out of it. I can't even feel my legs. I can't believe Mike had exprienced all that in his childhood.
"Then, what happened?" I asked.
He bowed his head, it looks as though he tried to hide something. Something that will wreck his pride.
"After that veteran guy killed Carmel, he left without a trace. I saw Carmel's corpse and screamed like crazy. My sister came and asked, 'Mike, Michael, what happened? I told you not to play in these grounds! Y-you look afraid, Why?' I pointed at Carmel's corpse. My sister held me tight because I kept on screaming. Then, some other villagers came and took Carmel's corpse to the hospital. After seeing all that, I locked myself in my room for 3 days. There were some soldiers that came to ask about the case to me, but I refused. My sister came and said, 'Michael,do you want to see Norrace one last time?' I came out and hugged my sister. She smiled. The next day it was Carmel's funeral, I came first and went home last. My sister kept waiting for me patiently. A year later, the veteran was caught and executed for killing the last remaining member of the Norrace family." he said.

I was still shocked. I could imagine all the blood, the pain, the suffering and the life Mike has to live through his childhood.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't now you had to go through all that." I said while crying. Mike smiled and reached out his hand at me.
"Come on, Carmel! Stand up, that's my past and you know it! You don't need to cry over the past. Come, let's go home." he said.
I nodded and washed up all my tears. I went back home with him.

At home....
"And where have you two been?" asked my uncle.
"Umm, I can explain." I said.
"I cant believe you did this to Carmel, little brother." said Ms. Rosalind.
"No, sister. It's a misunderstanding. I.." replied Michael.
"I know you two are good friends but it's dangerous for a peachy girl like Lia to go out with a young man like you." said my uncle.
"UNCLE!!!" I screamed.
"No, buts, Lia you have to do chores until I tell you to stop!" said my uncle.
"Whaaat????!!!" I said.
"And Michael, you have to help me wth work everyday until it's done." he said to Mike.
"Aww, man!" said Mike.
"No way! Uncle!" I screamed.
